Mysterious forces seem to want something from her, and if Marina can manage to survive her dangerous encounters with an unpredictable mermaid, she might just be able to unlock the mystery of her past.

And maybe even find true love along the way...

Book Review- Between the Land and the Sea by Derrolyn Anderson

Marina has to spend her senior year living with her aunt Abby and cousin Cruz as her father travels to Afghanistan. She is not thrilled to be going or attending an actual high school. She has no idea how to interact with people her age.
Once she arrives she finds that she and Cruz have a lot in common. She relaxes more and more. Then she meets Cruz’s friend Megan and her nerves diminish. She has two friends to do things with. She isn’t alone.
However she also meets someone new that shocks her. Lorelei knew her mother and Marina is determined to learn more even if it puts her life in danger. She knows that Lorelei won’t hurt her at least on purpose. After Ethan saves her for the second time, she shares her shocking secret. Cruz and Megan know about Lorelei but not why Marina is so determined.
This story was interesting. Marina is shipped to her aunt’s house and she isn’t happy. I was ready to dive into a story of a girl being an outsider then slowly settling in to a new place. That was only part of the story. The paranormal spin that the author added was what surprised me. Mermaids lived off the California coast. It was a fascinating twist. The secrets behind the mermaids and why Marina is drawn to them is shocking.
I loved Marina’s character and her friends. Cruz and Megan were accepting and everyone needs friends like them. Ethan was sweet and their relationship was sigh-worthy. Unfortunately Marina is stubborn about trying to do things herself. That was one thing that irritated me about her. She refused to ask for help. I wanted to shake her. Other than that I liked the story. I give it a 4 out of 5.

Between The Land And The Sea Marina Tales Book 1 eBook Derrolyn Anderson Reviews

Marina is a girl at high school age that has never been to a "regular" school in her entire life because she was always home-schooled by her traveling Father. She also has never been away from her Father. That is all about to change, when Marina's Father is sent to Afghanistan to do his job he tells Marina she is to go live with her Aunt Abby and Cousin Cruz while he is away for the year. She also is to go to the "regular" school so she isn't behind. To say she is not thrilled is an understatement. She is used to being with her Dad only and wither her fancy neighbor Evie, who lavishes Marina in gifts of designer fashion. Since her Dad has left her with her Aunt and cousin, she has almost drowned, has had an encounter of a supernatural kind with a real life mermaid, and has developed a huge crush on the most popular boy in school. Marina feels a connection with the Mermaid and wants to learn more about her. Problem is that every time she interacts with the mystic mermaid she almost drowns. She doesn't think the mermaid is trying to harm her, but she knows it is looking bad. Why would a mermaid seek Marina out? How is it that Marina can talk to this mermaid when no one else can? Will Marina survive long enough to answer these questions?

This was a nice young adult read, but I didn't find it as intriguing as others I have read. I really thought the concept of the mermaid was great though, and did enjoy that part of it. I found the characters to be quite interesting too for me to watch develop. Marina comes off a bit snobbish to me at first because of her previous way of living with so much luxury that she doesn't even seem to think anything of. I enjoyed Evie and her lavish personality and fashion and the way she dotted on Marina. Cruz was an interesting character too, that I enjoyed. The magic of the mermaid was great! The flow of the book seemed to be a bit slow. That is what I didn't like about the book. I felt like I was reading on and on and just waiting for the "something" to happen. It took a long time to get moving I thought. It was a nice book for what it was and is a sweet read for a fantasy reading young adult, but for me...it just didn't do it for me. I don't think I will read on in this series, but I had fun reading this book. Like I said the mermaid concept was enough to keep my attention, as was the great characters.

3/5 Stars
Between the land and the sea is a mermaid fairy tale; something which you figure out by the title of the book. It's a solid 2.5 stars. The book is extremely slow; I almost set it aside within the first 15% kind of slow. You follow a spoiled not spoiled girl through relocating to her place of birth, reuniting with her cousin, making a new friend, and snagging the boy of her dreams with just a look. I liked the premise of the book, but the story and writing did not grab me.

Pros you get a spin on mermaids
There's a cat
Heroine's father has an interesting job
You get a pretty good idea of the beach at Aptos. I really want to go whale watching.

Cons You nearly get a play by play of every day in the narrative - things that don't add much, if anything, to the story. This was why the first 15% of the book went by really slow for me. I began to skim it.
Lots of name brand dropping because somehow, this girl is a fashionista. The author goes into a lot of details on clothing. (If you like that kind of thing I suppose this is a pro for you.)
The story feels more like telling than showing. - this might have to do with the extensive amount of time put into detailing Marina's clothing.
No one else aside from Marina thought it was cool there were mermaids. Even if they were dangerous, I would have been fascinated along with her.
