Dylan Scott has problems. Dismissed in disgrace from the police force for assaulting a suspect, he has no job, his wife has thrown him out and—worse luck—his mother has moved in. So when Holly Champion begs him to investigate the disappearance of her mother thirteen years ago, he can't say no, even though it means taking up residence in the dreary Lancashire town of Dawson's Clough for the duration.

Although the local police still believe Anita Champion took off for a better life, Dylan's inquiries turn up plenty of potential suspects the drug-dealing, muscle-bound bouncer at the club where Anita was last seen; the missing woman's four girlfriends, out for revenge; the local landowner with rumored mob connections—the list goes on. But no one is telling Dylan all they know—and he soon finds that one sleepy Northern town can keep a lot of secrets.

Presumed Dead A Dylan Scott Mystery Book 1 edition by Shirley Wells Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews

I was hoping for a pleasant mystery. I got so much more! This series is about an ex-copper who is trying to find his way back. A young woman hires him to find out what happened to her mother who disappeared 13 years ago. I could not put the down! I am so glad that I found this series! The characters are believable and the mystery is believable. Cannot wait for Book 2!
Murder mystery that's thrust on an ex cop who was falsely accused of a crime and had to serve time.
In his personal life, the experience made him bitter and his wife now wants to leave him because of it. He's separated and living in a small flat.
A call comes in from a young girl whose mother went missing 13 years ago and she wants the ex cop to locate her. The detective work and how he gleans different pieces of information from the many people who knew the murdered woman, is engrossing.
Recommended.
Presumably, Ms. Wells is a woman. Her portrayal of Dylan Scott, however, gives us no clue to that presumption. His tangled love life and dedication to the job, while thoroughly masculine, are compellingly thoughtful. Twists and turns proceed at a quick enough pace to supply a masculine point of view, but character studies are as intricate and fully fleshed out as any reader could hope. I truly enjoyed this book, the story, Dylan Scott and the compelling, compassionate portrayal of all the characters in an unusually egalitarian way. Hoping to read more of this series soon...
This was a really good book. I enjoy learning some of the British terms we're not accustomed to. Anita Champion, a fun-loving mother of Holly, didn't come home one night. No one seemed to be concerned because apparently Anita had done this before. But she loved her daughter and she was expected to show up and didn't. Holly, as an adult, hired Dylan to find her mother after all that time. Dylan who was having problems at home and was convinced his wife would "come out of it" and let him move back into his house, but took on the case which took him away from home for long periods of time. Dylan was like a dog with a bone and wouldn't give up looking for Anita. I really liked this book.
I enjoyed this mystery a lot. We meet Dylan when he is not at the highest point in his life and career - blurb summarizes it nicely overall. I just want to say that he only spent in prison five months and because he was trying to apprehend a violent suspect. I just do not want any readers to think that this was an obvious case of the police brutality. I mean it was in a sense that he did not restrain himself enough, but he was in a fight trying to apprehend the suspect, he was not beating up somebody weaker than him.

And now his wife decided that she cannot live with him, and Holly Champion asking Dylan to investigate her mum's thirteen year old disappearance comes in handy for many reasons.

I really liked Dylan despite his seemingly annoying attitudes about women in the beginning of the book - I do not want to justify it, but I forgave him eventually, when people are pissed off at each other they often say what they do not mean. And I loved Dylan's fierce fighting on behalf of his client and how slowly but surely victim became a sympathetic character in her own right. The mystery was complex, I was shocked initially when it seemed that what happened to Anita (Holly's mother) was revealed around thirty percent of the book. Then I realized that nothing was revealed yet and the investigation just started.

Flawed but likeable characters, interesting plot, I definitely recommend this one and looking forward to the next book in the series.
Presumed Dead, a Carena Press e-book by Shirley Wells is an interesting mystery set in Lancashire Town of Dawson's Clough, England.
Dylan Scott, recently prison released former detective sergeant, wrongly imprisoned for mistreating a suspect, has lost his self-respect, been kicked out by his wife and lives in an ultra-small apartment. His mother, a still active `hippy' whom he loves but preferably at a distance, insists on joining him. Now a registered P.I. with few clients, he receives a call from Holly Champion who, impressed with his having earlier found a lost person, insists he discover what happened to her mother, Anita, who had disappeared 13 years ago. Local police, as well as most people, attribute gorgeous, fun-loving, free-loving Anita's disappearance to leaving the area for a better life. Conversely, with the P.I.'s patient and persistent interrogation of former friends, lovers and acquaintances, numerous bits of information surface leading to a more sinister scenario.
Dylan, a somewhat stereotypical male with no understanding of his wife's needs, otherwise is acceptably characterized, the pace is a little slow but the plot sufficiently complex to make this an interesting read. Reviewed by John H. Manhold, award winning fiction/non-fiction author.
