Victorian adventure -- an era full of top-hatted intrigue, dirigibles galore, all-too-demure sensuality and completely unironic classism. Now there's an antidote Dispatches from Wondermark Manor, a rollicking, absurd, completely ridiculous yarn from the author of the celebrated comic strip "Wondermark."
Taking the tropes of Conan Doyle-style adventure fiction and ramping them way over the top, Malki's story brings together
Ghosts in marble statues
Explosive airships
High society intrigue
Old men in salt barrels
Horses that cannot fly
Frightful moustaches aplenty
Cheese handling as an artform
General bad decisions, and
Casual mass murder
All in a stunningly-designed package evocative of the grandest pulp style. Praised by many for its strangeness and wonder, Dispatches from Wondermark Manor is offered here for the very first time in a complete omnibus edition, including all three volumes of the novels plus a separate prologue plus three all-new hand-drawn maps of the settings in the story.

I'm a long time reader of Wondermark (online comic by the same author) and greatly enjoyed the Machine of Death anthology Malki! put together, so this book was an Instabuy for me.However, I initially struggled to get into it. Loved the mad cap Victorian absurdist antics - but found it too disjointed to engage with at first. It didn't help that the murderous, callous and narcissistic protagonist is a little hard to connect with too.
I'm glad I stuck with it though! Although at points earlier in the prose it felt like Malki! was trying too hard to be weird, it began to assume a rhythm as the story became more and more a sweeping large scale adventure.
As the story progresses, you even begin to develop an empathy for the protagonist antihero, and by the end, I was positively cheering on his murders.
I recommend reading this book - it becomes more and more charming and I am already looking forward to a reread now that the character is so familiar to me.
Malki! is now firmly cemented on my Instabuy list and I look forward to anything else he produces.

Dispatches from Wondermark Manor The Compleat Trilogy edition by David Malki ! Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
I guess I should have read a sample before buying this book. Random, disconnected, and very short chapters of senseless violence and macabre non-humor. Maybe set in the Victorian era, but reference to the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles pretty well jar a person out of any sort of sense of place. Utter Rubbish.
Easily one of the funniest, most well-written books I've ever read.
Review edited After some dialog with the (very patient) author, many errors have been fixed. Book is now twice as awesome.
After years of wondermarking, this was my first foray into the Malki! novel, and I thought it was fantastic. I read a good bit of actual Victorian lit, and a lot of the little nuances he throws in there are dead on. I'm not a big steampunker, but I could also see this scratching that itch if you're into that sort of thing. As for normal people, the characters are fantastic, and the plot line is really engaging. I couldn't put it down until I finished it. I just wish I'd bought the hard copy for all the added fanciness of a hard copy and to make my book shelf look way cooler. I'd say the people (me and that other guy) have spoken and it's time to churn out a glorious sequel, Mr. Malki!.
